Wedding Registry Dos and Don’ts

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS | WHAT TO PUT ON YOUR WEDDING GIFT REGISTRY | WEDDING REGISTRY ITEMS 2023

As you start to plan your wedding, one of the first things you'll need to do is create your registry. This can be daunting, as there are so many options out there. What should you include? What should you avoid? Here are some tips to help make the process a little bit easier!

What to put on your wedding registry
  1. Do register for items you need and will use

Maybe you and your partner really need a new garbage can for the kitchen. It may not be glamorous, but if it’s useful to you, put it on your registry! At the end of the day, you’re going to end up with a lot of gifts throughout your wedding celebrations, and you want them to be things that will actually get put to use, rather than sitting in the box in your attic and collecting dust.

2. Don't register for things you don't need or want

On the same page as tip 1, don’t feel pressured to register for the typical “registry items” if you’re not going to use them! If you hate baking, you don’t need a KitchenAid stand mixer! Just because every “What to include on your registry” list on Pinterest includes an item doesn’t mean it will work for you and your partner.

How to make your wedding registry

3. Do research to find the best prices on the items you're registering for

One thing about most online registries is that they only mark off the gift as “purchased” if it was purchased through the exact link that you listed. This means, if you registered for an item through Amazon but Grandma saw a deal on the same item at Bed Bath & Beyond, she’ll have to manually go in and mark the item off, or someone else might buy you a duplicate. For this reason, do your best to make sure you have registered for your items at the best price. It will save your friends and family a few bucks, and save you the hassle of having to return duplicate items down the line!

4. Don't wait until the last minute to create your registry

A registry should be one of the first things you create after getting engaged. That might seem a little excessive, but there are going to be lots of people who want to send you something to say congratulations, and wouldn’t you rather it be something you picked out yourself?! If you’re having an engagement party, a shower, or any other pre-wedding celebrations, you’ll want to make sure that your registry is up roughly a month before those events so that people have time to shop.

5. Do include a variety of price points on your registry

Remember that not everyone has the same budget. While your grandparents might be more than happy to drop $500 on a gift for you, your friend from college probably can’t. Provide your guests with an array of options on your registry so they don’t feel guilty for staying within their budget. At the same time, offering some options at different price points will help to prevent anyone from going off-registry with their purchases and make sure that you get the items you actually want.

6. Don't forget about registering for gifts experiences, like tickets to a show or a dinner reservation

One of the greatest options in online registries is the ability to take cash gifts online. Whether you and your partner are saving for your honeymoon or a nice date night once a month, you can list those experiences on your registry and have people contribute some or all of the cost. Throw on some couples massages and you’ve got yourself a fantastic gift that won’t take up space in your home.
