How to Dress a Mixed Gender Wedding Party

MIXED GENDER WEDDING PARTY | NON BINARY WEDDING PARTY | LGBTQ+ INCLUSIVE WEDDING TIPS

The tradition of having Bridesmaids and Groomsmen in your wedding party is well-meaning but very antiquated. In 2022 we know that friends and family can be any gender, and there isn’t always a Bride and Groom at a wedding! If you’re trying to figure out how to dress your mixed-gender wedding party, these are some tips to make the process go as smooth as possible.

Be Open to a Variety of Silhouettes and Colors

Not every man is comfortable in a suit, and not every woman is comfortable in a dress. When planning your mixed-gender wedding party, you should keep your mind open to different outfit types - jumpsuits are becoming an easily-available option for many people. If you’re not limiting your party to a clothing binary of dresses and suits, it’s also a good idea to incorporate a range of hues in your wedding colors so that everyone isn’t trying to match one exact color.

Provide Them With an Inspiration Board

The best way to make sure that your wedding party understands what look you’re going for? Provide them with ample examples! Take the time to make a mood board full of the colors, materials, and silhouettes you’d like them to pull inspiration from. This will allow them to shop on their own at stores that they are most comfortable with while having something to reference so they don’t have tons of questions for you during the process.

Give Your Final Approval

Our number one tip for dressing any wedding party is to have them send you photos of the clothing before they purchase it. Since most of us do our shopping online these days anyway, you can easily give a yes or no on an outfit before they place their order. If you are nervous about telling someone “no” on a piece of clothing, ask them to send you three outfits each so you can simply choose the one you like best!

Be Open to Changes

Remember, your friends and family are living, breathing beings who change over time! If your wedding party picks their outfits a year ahead of the wedding, there may be changes that need to be made a few months before. Whether it’s a change in someone’s size or a changing relationship with clothes, it’s important to have an open line of communication with everyone in your wedding party!

The world of weddings is ever-changing, so don’t be afraid to break out of the mold and do what’s best for you and your loved ones on your wedding day. You’ll want to look back on your wedding day as a time you surrounded yourself with the people most important to you, not a day that you stuck to traditions that didn’t fit you!
